Hi there, constantly anxious Reylo here. In one of Rian's recent interviews he basically said the post-praetorian conversation boiled down to whether Rey was so desperate for an identity that she'd turn with Kylo and she choose not to have her identity given to her by him. It makes me nervous. It sounds like Rian put the love story in there to make her WANT to have a connection with Ben, only to ultimately reject it :/ can we still get reylo if Rey doesn't consider her identity to be with Ben?

That’s not how that works. It functions like other Gothic-type romances – it’s metaphor. If Rian only wanted to set up Rey rejecting him without any further progression: (1) W H Y? Narratively why? In a three part trilogy W H Y???? What’s the point of that? It’s silly in context of a character-centered story like this to not have relationships ebb and flow, push and pull, shift and change and – most importantly – GROW. (2) The point of it is to say that love itself, or affection itself, is not enough. They have a selfish love for each other. They want the other to fit an ideal that can’t be achieved. They’re immature and lack wisdom. (3) Tis a metaphor. Rey and Ben are the anima and animus archetypes and they are playing out that dynamic – one in which they must learn from each other – including their mistakes and disappointments. “The greatest teacher, failure is.” Through their failed first attempt to come together they will grow and learn, aalowing them to mature on their own before they can come back together as one – only in wisdom and united purpose can they complete each other. This is literally the anima and animus dynamic point for point - a page out of Jungian concepts almost step by step.
